Preregistrations Closing Wednesday Evening

FallCon Gaming Society - Wednesday, September 16, 2009
A quick reminder that I will be closing the online preregistration sometime after 8pm this evening. If you intend to preregister and possibly prepay for the con, please do so sometime today. Otherwise, registrations will take place throughout the convention this weekend.

Did I mention FallCon is THIS WEEKEND?!

The members of the FallCon Gaming Society had a quick meeting last night to discuss some last minute details and I gotta say, we are all really pumped for this weekend. We hope you are too!

See you on Friday,

Jasen

FallCon Food Services

FallCon Gaming Society - Wednesday, September 09, 2009
As many of you know, Mama Zanini has been running our FallCon kitchen for many years.  And sadly last year she announced her retirement.

But fear not!  We have found a wonderful replacement.  The youth group from St. Peters Church in Calgary, called the "St. Peter's Truth Group", has offered to run the kitchen for us this year.  They are using our event and other activities to raise money to attend World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain in 2011 (and check out their favorite regions from the game El Grande of course).

The "Truth Group Cafe and Bistro" has put together a menu with a variety of mouth-watering and economical options.  And, the more you eat in at the conference the more time you have for gaming!

Please check out their menu and plan on enjoying some or all of their offerings!

UPDATE: We had a question come in yesterday regarding the Saturday evening meal times and the availability of food at non-prime meal times. To clarify:

1) The Saturday evening meal will be available from 4:30-9:00pm so we straddle the auction.
2) The sandwich + wrap bar is available throughout the convention kitchen hours as an alternative to the meal "specials".  There will also be a variety of snacks including baked goods, chips, fruit, snack bars, etc available at the sandwich bar.

Spiel des Jahres Nominations Announced

FallCon Gaming Society - Wednesday, May 27, 2009
From Wikipedia:

The Spiel des Jahres (German for Game of the Year) is a prestigious award for board and card games.

The award was created in 1978 to reward excellence in game design, and to promote top-quality games in the German market. It is thought that the existence and popularity of the award is one of the major drivers of the quality of games coming out of Germany. A Spiel des Jahres nomination can increase the typical sales of a game from 500-3000 copies to around 10,000; and the winner can usually expect to sell 300,000 to 500,000 copies.

This year's nominations were announced on May 23rd:

Our Sunday schedule currently has a slot allocated to the Spiel des Jahres Winner or last year's winner Keltis. As Dominion and Pandemic are already on schedule elsewhere, the Sunday slot will be filled by one of the other nominees. Since designer Reiner Knizia won last year for his design of Keltis, it's highly unlikely he would get the nod this year for FITS. Should the winner be Fauna or Finca, we will pick a game to slot into the Sunday schedule based on game availability. At this point, I'd say the slot will either be filled by Finca or Keltis.

For more info on the Spiel des Jahres and its past winners, head over to the BoardGameGeek Wiki entry.
