CGDA Prize Announcement

FallCon Gaming Society - Wednesday, September 07, 2011

We've got HUGE news for our Canadian Game Design Award Semi-Finalists!

As was the case last year, the winner of the 2011 CGDA will receive a $200 cash prize from FallCon and a $500 cash advance from Valley Games, upon signing a publishing contract. Oh and a sweet, one-of-a-kind commemoration plaque. Tough to beat that, right? Well, thanks to the kind folks at Panda Game Manufacturing we now have additional prizes to announce.

For those of you who don't know, Panda GM is a Canadian company that provides overseas printing and sourcing services for publishers such as Valley Games, Z-Man Games, and Tasty Minstrel. Some of their recent projects include Merchants & Marauders, Ninjato, Belfort, Stronghold, and Survive. All incredibly beautiful productions. Well Panda GM has generously agreed to supplement the cash prize by an additional $200. Not only that, they have also agreed to offer a $500 manufacturing discount to the winner regardless of the publisher. The combined support from FallCon, Valley Games and Panda Game Manufacturing amounts to a $1400 windfall for the deserving winner.

How many of you will be working on your 2012 Canadian Game Design entries now? :)

First Game on the Full-o-Meter

FallCon Gaming Society - Wednesday, August 17, 2011
FULL

Well it's official folks: we have our first full event. Merchants & Marauders is now full with 16 registrants. This might be the first time we have a Sunday event win the unofficial race to fill-up.  Glad to see such healthy numbers for Sunday!

We have a number of other teaching tournaments that are close to filling up.

**UPDATED 1:30pm on August 17th**
Things happen fast as we've had 4 registrations since I posted this at midnight last night. Here's our almost full list:

Registrations tend to come in surges (as we saw this morning), especially over weekends so I'd highly recommend registering if you're at all interested in playing in these tournaments or learning these games in a dedicated session. These could easily fill up within a matter of days if there's a rush. Keep in mind we are only 2 weeks away from the early bird rate deadline so a rush is likely. Need other reasons why you might want to register early?

2011 CGDA Semi-Finalists Announced

FallCon Gaming Society - Tuesday, May 10, 2011
Man - it has been a long time between updates! Sorry about that folks. We (ok I) took a bit of a breather over the last few months but now that I've caught my breath, updates should be coming fast and furious (at least relatively) from now until Con Day!

Our news of the day is that we recently announced the semi-finalists for our annual Canadian Game Design Award. After a rigorous rules evaluation, our judges have selected the following games to play test in the 2nd round of evaluations:

  • Akrotiri by Jay Cormier & Sen-Foong Lim
  • Ciceron by Jérôme Morin-Drouin
  • Coven by Paul Saxberg
  • Yum: Realtime Ice Cream by Gavan Brown
  • That Flipping Property Game by Alan Biggs
  • The Market at Kos by Doug Meldrum
  • Undermining by Matt Tolman
  • *** Jump-Off by Gord Hamilton
UPDATE: After announcing our winners a few months back, one of our selected semi-finalists elected to not pursue his chances this year. I've been very late in updating this post. If you've managed to read this post before, you'll note that Potlatch Dice by Yves (Etienne) Tourigny is now replaced with Jump-Off by Gord Hamilton. Both are deserving semi-finalists and we wish Yves nothing but luck with his future game designs.

We had an excellent crop of 21 games this year, including a number of designers we hadn't seen in our list of 2010 entries. It was great to see our numbers up from last year. Several of our judges also thought the quality of designs had improved from the very high standard set last year. Good job everyone!

Thanks to all who entered the contest this year and we hope you'll consider entering the contest again in 2012. Congratulations and good luck to all our semi-finalists!

One Week to Entry Deadline

FallCon Gaming Society - Monday, January 24, 2011
A friendly reminder to those of you planning on entering our annual Canadian Game Design contest:

Deadline for entry is January 31st!

Last year, we were a little lax with the deadline but I can guarantee that won't be the case in 2011. This means you have exactly one week to submit your entry forms, rules and payments for this year's award. As most of us are either procrastinators or perfectionists (or in my case both), we expect a deluge of submissions this week. Keep in mind that in the unlikely case that we receive over 50 submissions, it will be the first 50 submissions to have paid their entry fee that will be considered eligible for this year's contest.

Best of luck to everyone! We're all very much looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
