The Best Game You Can Name...

FallCon Gaming Society - Sunday, October 02, 2011
PR

Thanks to Stompin' Tom Connors for the blog title today.

What better place than Flames Central to learn this hockey-themed party game and who better to learn it from than by none other than by Columbia Games' Grant Dalgliesh himself!

I just got off the phone with Grant and he's hoping he can round up 36 players for a fun, quick tournament. If we can fill all the slots up for the Sunday event, he tells me that he'll bring a copy of Slapshot for the winner and a generous $100 gift certificate off anything from the Columbia Games website. How's that for an incentive? The plan is to have an initial round robin and then a final table seeded by the winners of the round robin tables. Everything should be done within 2 hrs.

Now while there may be a lot on the line, keep in mind this is a relatively lighthearted cardgame where players assume the role of team general managers. The object is to skillfully manage your team into the playoffs and then win the championship. During the regular season (round robin), you will be able to improve your team with trades and drafts. Injuries and luck will play a part as in the real good ol' hockey game, so sportsmanlike conduct should prevail. Grant tells me he won't hesitate to throw someone in the box for a 5 minute whining major. He considers himself a ref's ref. :)

First Game on the Full-o-Meter

FallCon Gaming Society - Wednesday, August 17, 2011
FULL
photo credit: Benjamin Chun @ Flickr
Well it's official folks: we have our first full event. Merchants & Marauders is now full with 16 registrants. This might be the first time we have a Sunday event win the unofficial race to fill-up.  Glad to see such healthy numbers for Sunday!

We have a number of other teaching tournaments that are close to filling up.

**UPDATED 1:30pm on August 17th**
Things happen fast as we've had 4 registrations since I posted this at midnight last night. Here's our almost full list:

Registrations tend to come in surges (as we saw this morning), especially over weekends so I'd highly recommend registering if you're at all interested in playing in these tournaments or learning these games in a dedicated session. These could easily fill up within a matter of days if there's a rush. Keep in mind we are only 2 weeks away from the early bird rate deadline so a rush is likely. Need other reasons why you might want to register early?

Playing for Keeps Fundraiser

FallCon Gaming Society - Friday, February 25, 2011
Our friends at Valley Games and the Sentry Box are sponsoring a great fundraising event this weekend for the Little Moments Therapeutic Photography Foundation. The Foundation is an organization dedicated to providing good quality photos to families of children with cancer or other types of life altering illnesses. By doing this they hope to encourage positive healing and self confidence, things our children need dearly these days. The photography packages given to the children and their families include: a photography session, a colourful backpack, a build-your-own-bear, two 8x10 photos, one 4x6 photobook, and a CD/DVD of all photos taken. They supply these packages to the families at no charge as they do not wish to add to the financial burdens and stresses that may be experienced during these times.

The event itself will take place from 9am until 7pm at the Okotoks Elk's Hall this Saturday February 26th. Registration starts at 9:00 and games will follow at 10:00. The objective of this 2011 fundraiser will be to raise money for the photography packages Little Moments provides to families and to help them keep this needed service going. Various teaching tournaments will be available throughout the day along with prizes and a silent auction.

Some games include:

  • Settlers of Catan
  • Carcassonne
  • Dominion
  • Tichu
And for the kids:
  • Beep! Beep!
  • Lairs Dice
A few silent auction items include:

  • Cottonwood golf and Country club- 4 green fees and 2 power carts
  • Melissa and Doug Kids Piano
  • Framed & Numbered Limited Collectors Edition Miika Kiprusoff Picture
  • Flames Tickets to Calgary Oilers Game
  • Tribal Connection Market $50. Certificate and Coffee
  • Looking For Group Signed Book Set

  • Cactus Club Gift Card
Tickets are $40 dollars and children ten and under are free if they are with their parents. Preregistration and more information can be found at the following Facebook link (if you rsvp via Facebook, they will hold a spot for you).

Hope you can make it out to support this great cause!
