Shout-out to our SK Friends

FallCon Gaming Society - Tuesday, August 23, 2011
Unbeknownst to many, FallCon isn't strictly a Calgary affair. We get regular attendees from all over the province of Alberta but also from all corners of Canada, heck even the world! In the last few years, we've hosted attendees from Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Regina, Saskatoon, Houston, Seattle and even as far as Australia! One of our most consistent groups of traveling gamers are definitely our friends from Saskatchewan, so I thought I'd take a brief moment to highlight some of the great organizations supporting the game hobby in SK.

First off we have FRAG, also know at the Flatland Regional Association of Gamers. Based out of Regina, this non-profit group organizes a convention in May (FRAGCon) and also monthly Game Days. Every year I look forward to meeting up with the FRAG folks and playing as many games as I can with them at FallCon. If I was a gamer in Regina, I'd be joining their ranks in a heartbeat.

Next up we have some news from John Burt, one of our past FallCon organizers and serial Calgary Boardgames Meetup host. When John moved to Saskatoon last year, he decided he wanted to run a boardgaming convention of his own. With great skill, John has already managed to make that goal a reality: ToonCon will take place on October 1st and 2nd in Saskatoon. Additional info about the convention can be found at the ToonCon website. Gotta say: I LOVE the logo! And if you don't manage to see John at ToonCon, you'll be able to see him two weeks later at FallCon.

Finally, I also wanted to highlight the efforts of Matt Robertson in creating a central hub for gamers across Saskatchewan at SaskGames.com. Matt's hub aims to assist gamers to connect with other gamers of similar interests through a moderated forum and calendar system. The real genius behind the system is that it allows public and private game sessions to be published in a way that individuals have control over which calendar events they see, and which calendar events others see. Given more time, FallCon would love to implement a similar system for Alberta.
Three great organizations worth checking out in Saskatchewan! Hope we see our provincial brothers and sisters in full force in October!
