Someone Else's Treasure

FallCon Gaming Society - Tuesday, August 30, 2011

By popular demand, FallCon has decided to host a No-Shipping Math Trade at this year's event. Marc Boulet has kindly volunteered to organize and manage the Math Trade for us. Thanks Marc!

Some of you may not be aware of Math Trades on Boardgamegeek (BGG). They are essentially a group trading method where willing game traders pool their games and a computer algorithm determines the optimal trades amongst participants based on

    1. List of games being traded

    2. List of games each participant is willing to trade for (each game you submit can have a different willing-to-trade-for list)

    3. Maximum number of game-for-game trades amongst ALL participants.

By matching together the likes and dislikes of a lot of people at the same time, many more trades become possible. This last point is worth highlighting with an example from the BGG Math Trade Wiki:

A sends Razzia to C, and gets Queen’s Necklace from B
B sends Queen’s Necklace to A, and gets Jambo from C
C sends Jambo to B, and gets Razzia from A

Because these circular trades are possible within a Math Trade, it tends to make a lot more people happy!

So if you're interested in the concept, go check out the following links for more info. Please feel free to ask Marc questions about the FallCon Math Trade, as he is actively monitoring the threads on BGG.

The FallCon Method: Teaching Games Video

FallCon Gaming Society - Thursday, August 25, 2011

As a follow-up to Tim's excellent series of articles on teaching games (1, 2, 3), Tim and his son Kieran produced a great teaching video. In the video, Tim first reviews the framework he outlined in his third article, and then roleplays through an example by teaching us London (a game by Martin Wallace and one of my favorites of the past year).

If you'd like to see more of these videos, make your voice heard below in the comments.

Shout-out to our SK Friends

FallCon Gaming Society - Tuesday, August 23, 2011
Unbeknownst to many, FallCon isn't strictly a Calgary affair. We get regular attendees from all over the province of Alberta but also from all corners of Canada, heck even the world! In the last few years, we've hosted attendees from Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Regina, Saskatoon, Houston, Seattle and even as far as Australia! One of our most consistent groups of traveling gamers are definitely our friends from Saskatchewan, so I thought I'd take a brief moment to highlight some of the great organizations supporting the game hobby in SK.

First off we have FRAG, also know at the Flatland Regional Association of Gamers. Based out of Regina, this non-profit group organizes a convention in May (FRAGCon) and also monthly Game Days. Every year I look forward to meeting up with the FRAG folks and playing as many games as I can with them at FallCon. If I was a gamer in Regina, I'd be joining their ranks in a heartbeat.

Next up we have some news from John Burt, one of our past FallCon organizers and serial Calgary Boardgames Meetup host. When John moved to Saskatoon last year, he decided he wanted to run a boardgaming convention of his own. With great skill, John has already managed to make that goal a reality: ToonCon will take place on October 1st and 2nd in Saskatoon. Additional info about the convention can be found at the ToonCon website. Gotta say: I LOVE the logo! And if you don't manage to see John at ToonCon, you'll be able to see him two weeks later at FallCon.

Finally, I also wanted to highlight the efforts of Matt Robertson in creating a central hub for gamers across Saskatchewan at SaskGames.com. Matt's hub aims to assist gamers to connect with other gamers of similar interests through a moderated forum and calendar system. The real genius behind the system is that it allows public and private game sessions to be published in a way that individuals have control over which calendar events they see, and which calendar events others see. Given more time, FallCon would love to implement a similar system for Alberta.
Three great organizations worth checking out in Saskatchewan! Hope we see our provincial brothers and sisters in full force in October!
